Nobody at the Interstellar Space School had ever heard of Earth so naturally they treated Smith with contempt—or was it an innate fear?

This classic science fiction short story by Stephen Marlowe (1928-2008) first appeared in Imagination in January 1953.

Marlowe wrote science fiction, mystery novels, and fictional autobiographies. He's best known for his detective character Chester Drum, whom he created in the 1955 novel The Second Longest Night.

Marlowe wrote Earthsmith under his birth name Milton Lesser. Lesser legally changed his name to Stephen Marlowe, one of his many pen names, in the late 1950s. Marlowe also wrote under the pseudonyms Adam Chase, Andrew Frazer, C.H. Thames, Jason Ridgway, and Ellery Queen (the pen name Ellery Queen was created by Frederic Dannay and Manfred Bennington Lee, and was used by multiple authors).
