The Gun Philip K. Dick
Nothing moved or stirred. Everything was silent, dead. Only the gun showed signs of life ... Philip K. Dick (1928-1982) is considered one of the giants of science fiction. His novel The Man in the High Castle bridged the genres of alternate history and science fiction, earning Dick a Hugo Award for Best Novel in 1963. Flow My Tears, the Policeman Said, a novel about a celebrity who awakens in a parallel universe where he is unknown, won the John W. Campbell Memorial Award for best novel in 1975. Film adaptations of Dick's work include Blade Runner, Total Recall, Minority Report, A Scanner Darkly, Paycheck, and Next (not to be confused with the Michael Crichton novel Next). "The Gun" first appeared in Planet Stories in September 1952.
