The Test Colony Winston Marks

After a two year journey, humanity's first test colony in another solar system has landed on the planet Sirius XXII. When the colonists encounter a race of primitive golden-skinned little humanoids, the colony's leader, Phil Benson, fears that the rival intelligent species is the greatest threat the colony can face. But he soon finds that there are greater threats on Sirius XXII. This classic science fiction short story by Winston Marks (1915-1979) first appeared in If—Worlds of Science Fiction in September 1954.
