
A novice is one who is inexperienced—but that doesn't mean incompetent. Nor does it mean stupid!
The short story "Novice" introduces James H. Schmitz's most famous character, the genius-level 17-year old psi Telzey Amberdon. Telzey is vacationing on the planet Jontarou with her adopted cat Tick-Tock. Already in law-school, Telzey hasn't realized her latent psi abilities. However, there's something strange on Jontarou, and Telzey soon finds her psi abilities coming awake.
James H. Schmitz was a popular science fiction writer of the 1960s. Most of his work was originally published in science fiction magazines and later anthologized or expanded into novels. Schmitz is probably best known for his novel The Witches of Karres

Schmitz wrote several other stories about Telzey which were later collected in the anthologies The Universe Against Her
