Marcel LorAnge

Lifesaver

Marcel LorAnge is a Canadian artist from Montreal. He was born April 2, 1948, and has been have been a painter since 1975. His creations fall between categories such as surrealism and symbolism. He is often labeled as a fantasy artist. "My paintings create me!" LorAnge says.

LorAnge began as a singer, songwriter, and musician. He says that he studied art by looking at the old masters and reading everything he could find on their methods. Caravagio, Rubens, Bougereault, and the Pre-Rapaelites were his main influences. Painting started out as a hobby for LorAnge, but has mow turned into a full time profession. From surrealism to symbolism to fantasy art, he finally settled into a personal style that borrows from classical figurative painting and lends itself well to his sensitive expression.

LorAnge says he approaches painting as he did music, "...that is, I improvise. I meditate in front of a freshly color washed canvas and let it guide me in the creation of the work."

Siren Dreams

"In this less than perfect world, my paintings are meant to be doorways to a better place," LorAnge says. "I feel that my duty as an artist is to offer the public an oasis where anything can happen but choose to lean on the wonderful aspects of imagination so creatures like fairies and elves often appear in my painted universe. I use acrylic and oils on canvas in a pretty traditional manner but I very seldom start with a sketch, preferring to improvise as the painting develops. Some of my work takes years to finish while some are done in a few days, it's always a matter of inspiration and mood for me. I am a figurative artist but I refuse to be labeled a realist, I start from reality and always end up far from it. Music his my main inspiration, images just seem to appear out of nowhere when I listen to music just as I always hear music coming out of a painting I like."
