He moved to New York in 1983, where Tor Books assigned him to do the cover for The Lagrangists by Mack Reynolds. He worked almost nonstop with cover art for several years, painting many book covers for Tor, Baen, Berkley/Ace, Bantam, Bluejay, and Byron Priess. In 1986 he moved to northern Arizona, where he lives with his wife and two daughters. He continued to paint book covers until the late 1990's.
By 2000, the sci-fi book cover market had dried up for Gutierrez. After trying southwest landscape and New Age art, he settled on the growing popularity of Anime fan art, portraying anime characters in his own realistic art style, which he calls "Anime Fantasy Realism." He's still active with sci-fi gaming art, including Steve Jackson Games, Margaret Weis Enterprises, Pequod Press, and Light Technology Press. He's also made the transition from traditional art to digital art, now doing most of his work using Photoshop.
